Anna Barry recaps MAA-NCS Summer Seminar Conceptual Climate Models
Members Anna Barry, Richard McGehee, Samantha Oestreicher, Jim Walsh and Esther Widiasih organized an MAA-sponsored workshop on conceptual climate models at Augsburg college in Minneapolis during July. Participants came from Minnesota and neighboring states to learn about teaching and modeling climate.
Topics covered by the workshop included zero- and one-dimensional energy balance models, effects of greenhouse gases, Milankovitch cycles, and Snowball Earth. The format consisted of alternations between lectures and hands-on worksheets and computer sessions. Participants left with ideas for presenting material to high school, undergraduate, and graduate students, as well as a feel for where mathematicians can play a role in climate research.
