Alejandro Aceves named Department Chair
Starting August 1st, 2015, MCRN member Alejandro Aceves will serve as the Department Chair of the Department of Mathematics at Southern Methodist University (SMU), in Dallas, Texas. It is a 3-year term. With a new Scientific Computing initiative in place at SMU, he will work on enhancing interdisciplinary research activities within and outside the University.
Prof. Aceves is currently the group leader of the MCRN Electric Grid Research Focus Group. The group began at the 2014 Annual Meeting in Chapel Hill, North Carolina, with Alejandro's talk in the panel titled "Mathematical opportunities in food system networks, the electric grid and data/computational issues." The Electric Grid Focus Group has read, taken turns presenting and discussed several suggested papers. Guest speakers Michael Chertkov (Los Alamos National Laboratory) and Takashi Nishikawa (Northwestern University) delivered webinars on "Complex Energy Systems," and "Realistic modeling and analysis of synchronization dynamics in power-grid networks," respectively. Alejandro shared what he had learned at the Analytic Research Foundations for the Next Generation Electric Grid workshop, organized by the Board On Mathematical Sciences and Their Applications, in February of this year.
Alejandro is not new to the position of department chair. He was also the chair of the Mathematics Department of the University of New Mexico between 2004 and 2008.
